Troubled
Teens camps that emphasize experiential therapy
can profoundly affect teenagers with issues such
as ADHD, Autism, Asperser’s, obesity, learning
differences, or behavioral problems. Troubled
teenagers and youth with special needs often don't
fit into traditional summer camps. Parents who
have teens heading down the "wrong path"
will often see dramatic changes in their teen's
attitude, behavior, and motivation after a therapeutic
wilderness camp or other alternative summer camps.
The theory behind these camps is that if you
shout enough at trouble teens and discipline them,
they will get in line. Angry, defiant, oppositional
teenagers may fall in line while in the intensely
overwhelming, military-like environment of a boot
camp, but in most cases these short-term scream
camps do not create lasting changes in troubled
teenagers.
A boot camp is a very firm, highly structured
facility where a parent would send a teenager
that is disobedient, unruly, out of control. The
teenager may possibly have started to experiment
with illegal substances, and may even have some
minor legal problems.
Teen Boot Camp: Boot camps are programs that
are often utilized by parents whom looking for
some type of a quick fix for trouble teens. These
boot camps usually range in time from 7-30 day
periods of treatment. Some counselors do not feel
that juvenile boot camps provide the necessary
needs to make a permanent change in a troubled
teenager's life. Usually a parent will find that
after returning from these military style boot
camps their child shows signs of improvement for
days or even weeks. But after along time, the
teen then reverts back to his old ways after the
fear of superiority disappears.
Juvenile boot camps provide all the necessary
after-care that is needed to make a permanent
change in a teen's life. Traditionally after returning
from these camps teen shows signs of improvement
for few days or few weeks. But all too often,
the teenager then reverts back to his/her previous
ways after the fear of seniority disappears.
The camps we refer to are also designed for teenagers
that are not currently taking medications. Some
of the camps will keep reducing the teenager's
meds until they are totally off of them. Some
of the camps will request that the teen already
be weaned off of the meds they are taking before
they arrive. As we have stated in other areas
of our site, we are not doctors and are not skilled
of diagnosing your teenager. A physical and psychological
evaluation should be done locally prior to sending
your child to a boot camp. The camps we work with
try to help a teenager learn to deal with life
without his or her medicine. These camps for trouble
teens seem to have pretty good success with a
philosophy based on structure and discipline.
When teenagers are struggling to find their place
in the world, they need to learn how to act in
the world. World is not just as boot camp. It
is a rough place at all the times, and requires
cooperation, kindness, reliability, and other
positive behavioral qualities. Most of the troubled
youth need strong guidance, structured, therapy,
and the discovery of natural consequences of behavior.
For this, if an adolescent is truly struggling
with behavior, emotions, and academics, they need
something that is more sophisticated and sensitive
then a tough drill sergeant in his or her face.
