Pregnant Teen Help:
Teen pregnancy is one of the major teen issues that parents are facing these days. It comes as a feeling of shock to both teens and their parents. In teenage child is attracted towards sex and especially unsafe sex which causes a lot of unwanted teenage pregnancies.
There are three main reasons of teenage pregnancy in girls which are:
- Unwanted Sexual Intercourse (which may include rape or unwilling involvement in sex due to pressure from their partners)
- Inconsistent use of contraceptives.
- Lack of effective sex education.
According to the facts United States have highest number of teenage pregnancies compared to other countries. In US about 750,000 teenagers get pregnant each year. About 415,408 teenage mothers gave birth to child in year 2004. Teenage pregnancy is one of the major reasons of girls dropping out of schools. More than 2/3 of all teenagers having a baby are unable to graduate from high school. Although teen birth rates have dropped in last few years, still it is a major problem.
An unwanted and unexpected teen pregnancy is a tough time for teens as well as their parents but it should be faced with courage. Teenage pregnancy cause a lot of health problems to the mother and babies about to be born. Teens face more complications such as anemia, high blood pressure, premature delivery or miscarriage so they needs more care and support from family. There may be some physical or emotional changes that a pregnant teen may experience. Due to unwanted pregnancy teen may also get heavily depressed tending them for suicide. Help from doctor and psychiatrist is very helpful in this case.
Prevention:
There are many programs and campaigns that are working in this field to prevent teen pregnancy by making teens aware of this. Along with this there are some common steps that parents can take to prevent this problem in their families such as:
- Have a healthy communication between you and your teens.
- Give appropriate answers to your teens if they have any question about sex or sexual relationships. Don’t try to neglect their queries about sex.
- Try to develop their belief in social values.
- Monitor their heavy relationships with opposite sex.
- Addiction to drugs and alcohol make teens sexually more active than others. So watch for any signs of drug or alcohol abuse in your teenager.
- Teenagers should be made aware about safe sex, contraceptive options, and problems regarding teenage pregnancy.
- Encourage their participation in sports and outdoor activities.
