Troubled Teens camps that emphasize experiential therapy can profoundly affect teenagers with issues such as ADHD, Autism, Asperser’s, obesity, learning differences, or behavioral problems. Troubled teenagers and youth with special needs often don't fit into traditional summer camps. Parents who have teens heading down the "wrong path" will often see dramatic changes in their teen's attitude, behavior, and motivation after a therapeutic wilderness camp or other alternative summer camps.
The theory behind these camps is that if you shout enough at trouble teens and discipline them, they will get in line. Angry, defiant, oppositional teenagers may fall in line while in the intensely overwhelming, military-like environment of a boot camp, but in most cases these short-term scream camps do not create lasting changes in troubled teenagers.
A boot camp is a very firm, highly structured facility where a parent would send to troubled teens that is disobedient, unruly, out of control. The troubled teens may possibly have started to experiment with illegal substances, and may even have some minor legal problems.

These boot camps usually range in time from 7-30 day periods of treatment. Some counselors do not feel that juvenile boot camps provide the necessary needs to make a permanent change in a troubled teenager's life. Usually a parent will find that after returning from these military style boot camps their child shows signs of improvement for days or even weeks. But after along time, the teen then reverts back to his old ways after the fear of superiority disappears.

The camps we refer to are also designed for teenagers that are not currently taking medications. Some of the camps will keep reducing the teenager's meds until they are totally off of them. Some of the camps will request that the teen already be weaned off of the meds they are taking before they arrive. As we have stated in other areas of our site, we are not doctors and are not skilled of diagnosing your teenager. A physical and psychological evaluation should be done locally prior to sending your child to a boot camp. The camps we work with try to help a teenager learn to deal with life without his or her medicine. These camps for trouble teens seem to have pretty good success with a philosophy based on structure and discipline.
When teenagers are struggling to find their place in the world, they need to learn how to act in the world. World is not just as boot camp. It is a rough place at all the times, and requires cooperation, kindness, reliability, and other positive behavioral qualities. Most of the troubled youth need strong guidance, structured, therapy, and the discovery of natural consequences of behavior. For this, if an adolescent is truly struggling with behavior, emotions, and academics, they need something that is more sophisticated and sensitive then a tough drill sergeant in his or her face.
